Menstrual migraine is due to the increasing and decreasing levels of estrogen in the brain during this time. Women have up to five (!) estrogen receptor sites in the brain and with all of them busy binding and unbinding estrogen, well this creates one heck of a headache. Many female migraineurs say that this headache can be the worst headache they have ever had. Like other migraines the headache symptoms are pounding, throbbing pain, sensitivity to light and sound and nausea. Unlike other migraines the symptoms are all magnified to the point where the headache may be disabling. Not only is she nauseated, but vomiting may also occur.Tension-type headache? If you have a feeling like a band being squeezed around your head, or if you simply feel muscle tension on both sides of the neck or back, it’s possible that you have this common, occasional type of headache. Some unfortunate people, however, have them every day.

There are many different types of headaches and all have different causes. Tension headaches are very common and usually induced by stress. Many physiotherapists rely on massage therapy to easy away tension that builds up in the upper back and neck that causes tension headaches. Massaging the temples in a certain manner can also relieve the pain. While it sometimes takes hours for medications for tension headaches to work, a visit to the physiotherapist can often relieve your pain within a manner of a few minutes. The relief of headaches and migraines is one reason many people seek physiotherapy treatment. If you get lots of headaches at work, your headache pain could be caused from work-related stress. If you get migraine headaches after you haven’t eaten for four hours you should start eating smaller meals more often and never go without food for more than three consecutive hours. Dehydration can also cause migraines in some people so be sure to drink plenty of water each day.

Caused by the over use/abuse of over-the-counter and prescribed headache remedies that often contain caffeine. Headache sufferers tend to use the medications in higher dosages or more frequently than prescribed, causing a headache “rebound effect.”For episodic tension headaches that occur less than three times per week, OTC pain relievers such as aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) are convenient and effective. Combination products of pain medication with caffeine may help some people, but also may be habit forming. Use of any OTC pain reliever should be limited to no more than two or three days per week. If pain medications are overused, rebound headaches may occur on the days that medications are not taken.
